IMSA STUDENTS WIN FIRST PLACE AT STATE MATH CONTEST

AURORA – A team of 33 students from the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) won first place in the 28th Annual Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) State Math Contest (Div. 4 AA) held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on April 26. IMSA team members include (see attached list).
Students representing 60 high schools throughout the state competed in the contest which featured 14 events covering topics in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, PreCalculus and Calculus. IMSA students won first or second place in seven events: 1st place- Geometry, Algebra II, Freshman/Sophomore 8-person team, and Junior/Senior 2-person team; 2nd place- Freshman/Sophomore Relay (team 1), Junior/Senior 8-person team and Freshman/Sophomore 2-person team.
IMSA President Dr. Max McGee commended the students and faculty for their preparation and perseverance in preparing for this highly competitive and coveted award.
“It is refreshing to see so many young men and women at IMSA and in the competing high schools so accomplished at mathematics,” Mc Gee said. “I hope that the competition continues to ignite student interest, engagement and achievement across Illinois, because this is a time when our great state needs to redouble our commitment to mathematics education.”
IMSA students were coached by mathematics teachers Dr. Steve Condie of Naperville, and Dr. Micah Fogel, Mark Kammrath, Dr. Michael Keyton and Dr. Vince Matsko all of Aurora.
